His thoughtful biblical analysis seeks a more nuanced, holistic, and contextually informed understanding of faith and money. The tendency to pluck a single Bible text out of context and universalize its meaning has distorted beliefs about money and possessions, according to Witherington. He counters this selective misuse of scripture by applying three contextual lenses. The first is the canonical context. Recognizing that scripture is not monolithic, one must honor the diversity of perspectives within the biblical witness. The second lens he uses is understanding how the economic world of antiquity, based primarily on barter, differed significantly from that of today. The book of Proverbs, for example, addresses a social setting of relative prosperity.

Chapter 9 – Tithing, the Road to Prosperity – Prosperity by Charles Fillmore
Another secret of prosperity is to give ten percent of yourself to God. Giving a tenth is what is known as a tithe. Today I received a revelation concerning the word tithe. I didn't hear it as tithe. The ten percent is the portion of the divine talent that becomes a seed to tie you to your God Presence, to God, the Great Source , so that the next cycle of the decimal system will grow. It's the zero, you see. And by giving that tenth, you are planting the seed that makes your supply grow into the next cycle. If you deny it to God, you actually don't gain at all. By holding it back you lose, because you don't have any seed to make it grow in the next cycle. There is a successful construction machinery man who made a compact with God to give away ten percent of all that he had when he was a young man.
Tithing is a controversial topic. It is definitely one of those issues that can ruin a dinner conversation. Some people believe in tithing and hold that it is the key to financial prosperity. Others say that it is only the key to the financial prosperity of the preacher who is promoting it. Are these the only perspectives on tithing? Both views of tithing are promoted in the church today.
The word "tithe" means "tenth" and the ancient people regarded the number 10 as the number representing increase. The foundation for the ancient law of prosperity is the universal belief that true prosperity comes from a spiritual basis. Our minds, emotions, bodies, our talents, education, experiences, our jobs or professions are all vehicles or instruments of this prosperity; however Spirit or Awareness is the source. It therefore follows that if we want to be consistently prosperous we need to do something to "keep in touch" with that infinite source of all supply. True Generosity is the practice of selfless giving ie with no strings attached. It is also known by the universal adage "as you give so shall you receive. You will prosper, and you will also help your spiritual teacher or organization to continue with their spiritual mission of helping mankind. From there - everyone prospers. It is important to emphasize that one's intention need to be on selfless-giving, and not on the getting.
